December was Writing Month at SCIDES, and it was great to see your writing adventures on our Facebook page; we’re looking forward to hearing from you about your reading journey in January!
Reading is one of the fundamental superpowers. It educates, entertains, empowers, and even makes you a better writer. We’re excited to dive into Reading Month by bringing you a list of events and resources to make you a Reading Superhero.
Canada Reads. The 2016 edition of Canada Reads is all about “starting over,” and the final five books will be announced on January 20th. Mark your calendars and follow along!
January 22nd is National Reading Day, and while this day is observed in the United States, it still provides a lot of great resources for anyone to use. You can check out their Facebook page to join in the fun.
January 27th is Family Literacy Day in Canada. It was created by ABC Life Literacy in 1999, and has been an annual event ever since. Reading as a family has benefits for literacy and childhood development, and you can watch a short video from this year’s Honourary Chair, award-winning Canadian author Barbara Reid, right here.
The 2016 couch to 10K reading challenge. We love the name of this challenge! Reading often happens on the couch, and the 10K stands for 10,000 pages – how perfect is that? Reading 10,000 pages equals about 25-30 books, but any page you read will count towards your goal. Are you up for it?
The goodreads 2016 book list. It’s a comprehensive list of different genres (published and anticipated books). You can dive into it and start exploring. Maybe you’ll dig up some favourites to read again (there are several “best of” lists within), or you’ll discover a new author who will become a favourite (on the 2016 Debut Author list).
The 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time. Time Magazine complied this fantastic list of books, and even though they fall into the Young Adult category, they are certainly suitable for adults, as well. From classics like “To Kill a Mocking Bird,” by Harper Lee, to powerful newer books like “Looking for Alaska,” by John Green, this list will make it easy for you to conquer the couch to 10K challenge.
We’d love to hear about your reading adventures! Connect with us on our Facebook page, and let us know how you will become a Reading Superhero in 2016. Happy New Year!
